Former Congressman Matt Gaetz hinted at a possible run for Florida governor just days after withdrawing from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s Attorney General.
On Saturday, Gaetz responded to a post by former Florida House Representative Anthony Sabatini, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Gaetz will be the next Governor of the State of Florida.” Gaetz replied with a GIF of the Florida state flag waving.
This development comes after Gaetz announced he was no longer a candidate for Attorney General, prompting speculation about his political future. Current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.
Gaetz resigned from Congress after Trump initially nominated him as Attorney General on November 13th. However, he left open the possibility of reclaiming his House seat in the 119th Congress.
Should Gaetz choose to return to the House, he will face an ongoing ethics investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use. Gaetz denies these allegations.
A special election to fill Gaetz’s congressional seat is scheduled for April 1, 2025.
Donald Trump, incoming President, announced his selection of Pam Bondi for Attorney General on Thursday. Bondi, previously Attorney General in Florida, will lead the Justice Department.
